A few years ago I stumbled across a web site showing a hilarious sequence of pictures of the Sinkhole of Doom, sometimes referred to as Sarlacc the Sinkhole. There's precious little that's as entertaining as seeing an old couple watch a car get sucked into an innocent-looking puddle of water. I passed the link around to some friends, but most of them couldn't see it because the site went down shortly thereafter. Determined to share the laughs, I managed to dig up a cached version of the site, which I promptly downloaded and hosted here myself.
Since then, I've been worried that sites I find immensely entertaining will go into the Great Bit Bucket in the Sky, never to be seen (and laughed at) again. So when I come across one that's sure to be a classic, I download the site-- often called "scraping" it-- and drop it right here so I can be sure to preserve it for future generations.
Without further ado, then, here are some of the sites I've added to the collection over the years. Note that some of them are actually my own creations, or part of some larger practical joke. |
The Ten Worst Album Covers of All Time -- A look at what happens when bad music meets bad marketing. |
What To Do in a Terrorist Attack -- A re-labeled version of actual pictures from a U.S. government web site about responding to terrorists. |
What a Crappy Present! -- The real world's answer to the RIAA's lovely lawsuit frenzy. |
Dirk for President -- The joke's on my friend Dirk. Apparently this site started a whole political movement in his office. |
Sarlacc the Sinkhole -- Beware what lies beneath. |
The Horror of Blimps -- A now-famous blog post by a guy who learned that blimps are menacing evil forces. |
Often, nothing conveys humor quite like video. These are some video clips I've collected over the years. They can always bring a smile (or, in some cases, a cringe) to my face. Click on one to play it.
Oh, and apologies that many of these are in the horrible Windows Media Video format-- that's the way they came, and I don't have the time nor inclination to convert them all to something reasonable like MPEG-4. |
Episode III, A Lost Hope -- The greatest parody movie teaser of all time. |
Bouncy Balls -- An awesome look at what happens when you release a quarter-million colored rubber balls down a street in San Francisco. |
Keeping America Scared -- A set of clips from the 2004 Republican National Convention showing how much Bush and his cronies want Americans to believe they're in grave danger. Funny but also thought-provoking. |
Boots of Escaping -- The main reason Dirk's mom never let him play Dungeons and Dragons as a kid is probably because she was afraid this would happen to him as an adult. |
Crash Different -- Most people who use Mac computers are absolute zealots about them. This guy... is not. |
Forklift safety video -- It doesn't matter that this instructional video is in German; by the time it's over you'll know quite well how to drive a forklift properly. |
Bilbo Baggins, The Song -- In case you're wondering why Leonard Nimoy's singing career never really took off, this will answer all your questions. |
'Ping Pong Matrix' -- One of the greatest clips of all time, showing a bunch of Japanese game show contestants giving their rendition of a game of ping pong, a la The Matrix. |
Sportka -- The Ka's Evil Twin. Say no more. |
Thppt! -- Dangers of a live TV news broadcast. |
Oh, by the way, all copyrights on these pages and videos are the property of their respective owners, blah blah blah. |
